Overview

Tourism and Hospitality is one of the fastest growing global sectors. This cohesive programme is designed to enable students to develop concepts and theories related to hospitality and tourism management. It also provides students with practical work experience and deepens their critical understanding of operational and management issues within the sector. Using live case studies, this programme provides students with the opportunity to experience and assess the physical and cultural resources of the tourism and hospitality industry.

 The MSc programme is delivered over 2 semesters of taught modules, followed by the 60 credit final project.  The programme can also be studied part-time, with the minimum period of study being two years and the maximum five years.

To meet the educational and professional needs of each student, the programme is designed to promote active engagement of the student with the subject area and reflect the strong vocational emphasis of the award. 



Course Content

The core modules are designed to expose participants to real industry related operations and provide opportunity throughout to apply theory to real life management situations.

Core Modules for the MSc. in International hospitality and Tourism Management:

  • Managing People & markets across cultures (20 credits)
  • Tourism, Hospitality and Events Industries in Context (20 credits)
  • Industry Project Management (20 credits)
  • Exploring Hospitality & Tourism Landscapes (20 credits)
  • Research Methods  (20 credits)

Optional modules

  • Internship (20 credits) OR
  • Crisis, Risk and Strategic Change Management  (20 credits)

Final project
Dissertation OR Enterprise Project OR Consultancy Project (60 credits).
The final, 60 credit project is a triple module, completed by students after they have completed all taught modules. Whether an academic piece of research or an investigation into the launching of a business; it is designed to be an intellectually challenging piece of individual management research. It will equip successful students with the knowledge, capabilities and competences required of today's managers, in a world in which the ability to research new information is increasingly important.



Assessment

The assessment strategy covers a wide spectrum of approaches. Each module has its own aims, objectives, learning outcomes and methods of delivery and assessment. Assessments may therefore take the form of assessed written papers/essays/reports, oral presentations, group and individual research projects, posters, reflective papers which may involve compiling scrapbooks, case studies as well as open/closed book formal examinations.

Preparation and support is available for assessment through various activities designed by module leaders, personal tutors and library.​

The submission points for assessments are phased throughout the year to manage students' workload with specific dates made available to students at the beginning of each academic year.



Employability & Careers

All students undertake a live consultancy project through the Industry Project Management module, which provides an opportunity to engage with employers in the industry.  Students have multiple options to undertake Internship modules within the programme, usually engaging in a full time role in an organisation.

Students undertake operational, supervisory and if possible, management tasks and duties within the organisation;  During their internship students are expected to follow the same work pattern as other employees in the organisation and to perform routine work consistent with that which they aspire to upon successful completion of their programme of study.  They will also undertake a work based project tailored to meet the needs of the organisation.  Students can opt for an individual consultancy project as their final project.

The majority of students have progressed to managerial roles within the industry.

On top of the above, career events, the Student Career Office and the Alumni allow students opportunities to further their connections and networking activities.
