On Friday, March 6, 2015, the Modern University for Business and Science held its second annual Science Rally. The Science Rally, organized by the School of Health Sciences at MUBS in collaboration with researchers and faculty from Stanford University (USA), St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (USA), and American University of Beirut (AUB).
The competition was open to high school students in grades 11 and 12.
It aims to encourage students to consider the “WHY” of the scientific phenomena that they encounter in their everyday lives. Through such academic competitions, the university hopes to foster a spirit of curiosity among the younger generation, and to encourage them to seek scientific answers to observations from normal day-to-day activities.
Sixteen of the most respectable schools’ teams in Lebanon competed over eight rounds in front of a scientific jury consisting of: Dr. Jomana Elaridi, Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the Lebanese American University. Dr. Rouba Hage-Sleiman, Assistant Professor of Biology at the Lebanese University and Dr. Ahmad Chaalan, Chairman, Physics Department at the Lebanese University.
The event was attended by Dr. Ahmad Jammal, Director General of Higher Education in Lebanon, Dr. Hatem Alamy, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at MUBS, faculty and staff, contestants’ friends, family, teachers, and school principals who provided great support of the teams, and were on the edge of their seats as the competition advanced.
By the end of the competition, the finalists' rankings were as follows:
Winners: Baakleen Official Secondary School
Second: Lycée National- Bekaata
Third: Makassed Islamic High School- Saida
The winning team received five plane tickets to Turkey, the second place team won 800 USD while the third place team won 600 USD.
