Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve

1. In July 2005, UNESCO declared the Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve a "Biosphere Reserve" under the name of Shouf Biosphere Reserve (SBR). Tell us about what that means and how has it changed the presence and operations of the reserve?

In July 2005, UNESCO declared the Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve a "Biosphere Reserve" called the Shouf Biosphere Reserve (SBR) with an area of approximately 50,000 hectare - or 5% of the total area of Lebanon. A Biosphere Reserve is an area of land that is protected by law in order to support the conservation of ecosystems, as well as the sustainability of human’s impact on the environment. Biosphere reserves should contain one or more core zones, buffer zones, and a transition zone to accommodate their multiple functions.

 1. Core zone of the SBR is about 161 sq km. The main conservation objectives of the core zone are the protection and rehabilitation of the SBRs natural and cultural values.
 2. Buffer zone of the SBR is about 54 sq km. It surrounds the core zone(s) where only activities compatible with the conservation objectives can take place.
 3. Transition zone (development zone) of the SBR is about 233 sq km. It includes all the villages surrounding the SBR where sustainable resource management practices are promoted.
Through this nomination the reserve became more internationally recognized which opened many international collaborations to achieve the reserve’s mission on conservation, socio-economic development etc…
Also this allowed the SBR to join international networks like IUCN, ARAB MAB, etc…and being part of these networks ensured a good exchange of knowledge and practices between SBR and other international reserves.
And now SBR became a well-known research site for many international students and is helping to meet the scientific, economic, educational, cultural and recreational needs of the present and coming generations.

2. What activities does the reserve organize around the year, especially in terms of ensuring outreach to the whole Lebanese community?

The reserve organizes local festivals in the SBR nearby villages, where locals from all over the villages participate. Those festivals stress on reviving the authenticity of the region and include traditional rural dinners, musical concerts, walking in nature etc..
Also the reserve hosts the Meshwar Me3 Meghwar annual hike that attracted last year around 7000 participants from all over Lebanon.
Reforestation days are organized where many local community members, NGOs, schools, public and private sectors participate in the plantation and restoration of some sites. Recently a big reforestation day was organized in the SBR with more than 1000 participant and around 5000 seedlings were planted, this was done in collaboration with other partners (LRI, Byblos Bank, etc.)
Adding to this, the reserve organizes some special events as the musical trail, where hikers and nature lovers from all Lebanon can hike while enjoying live musicians playing their instruments along the trails.

3. What are the special species that live inside the reserve? How old is the oldest tree at the reserve?

The SBR harbors a rich flora, many of them medicinal, edible, and aromatic plants. The reserve is home to many internationally and nationally threatened species; some are endemic to Lebanon or the Syria/Lebanon/Turkey area; others are rare species; and also some species that are restricted to the Eastern Mediterranean or Middle East area.
The birdlife of the Shouf Mountains includes rare or endemic birds such as the Syrian serin (Serinus syriacus), Eagle owl, Chukar partridge, Longlegged buzzard, etc.
Furthermore, the reserve is one of the last remaining areas in Lebanon where larger mammals that once roamed the region can still be found, such as the wolf, wild boar and the caracal which appeared recently.
The SBR, however, is most famous for hosting the largest stands of Lebanese cedar (Cedrus libani) in the country. The Cedar of Lebanon is a highly symbolic, world-famous conifer tree, and one of the most cited plants in history, religion and mythology. The SBR hosts about 620 hectares of cedar forest, which are largely confined to the steeper and less accessible areas. SBR hosts one of the oldest trees which is around 2000 years old. Nowadays the cedar forest, protected from grazing and other human interference, is showing clear signs of natural regeneration.
Whereas the cedars are found at the higher altitude of the western slopes of the Shouf, the lower altitudes and eastern slopes are the domain of evergreen and broadleaf East Mediterranean oaks, such as Quercus infectoria, Quercus calliprinos, and Quercus brandti sp. Look – an endemic subspecies to the Reserve. Many of the oak forests have been subject to regular harvesting for firewood and charcoal production, resulting in extensive areas of coppiced oak woodland and low forest with shrub vegetation covering most of the remaining areas.

4. As we know, the Shouf Biosphere Reserve is the main reserve in Lebanon covering around 50,000 hectares of land that are equivalent to 5% of the Lebanese territory. How do you maintain the security and wellness of the trees all over the reserve?

The reserve has a special program known as the Integrated Monitoring Program [IMP] which was formulated to pave the way for the implementation of successful adaptive management principles relying on developed tools such as a monitoring program, plant diversity databases, spatial analysis models and vegetation maps.
These tools assist the management team in evaluating on-site status and ecological trends of the reserve. The main categories covered area; flora, birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and insects. And through this program, field patrols are done where all biodiversity and violations from hunting, sites degradation, vandalism etc...are recorded for corrective actions and measures to be taken when needed. Moreover, the reserve’s research and monitoring team does regular monitoring field visits to ensure the health and wellness of trees and the reserve’s biodiversity wealth.

5. April 22 is the Earth Day, how do you celebrate it?

April 22 is celebrated through raising environmental awareness and spreading knowledge on the importance of preserving our mother Earth. This is done, through highlighting this day on the reserve’s social media platforms and on the entrances.

6. The world is experiencing climate change today. Consequently, what are the major challenges that are/would be facing SBR and the species living within and how are these handled?

Lebanon is particularly vulnerable to the present and future impact of climate change, and the Second National Communication of the Lebanese Government to the UNFCCC calls for the implementation of experiences of forestation/restoration that can maximize the resilience of the ecosystem to the foreseen impacts, including forest fires. The main challenge regarding climate change in the Mediterranean region will be the increase in frequency, magnitude and severity of extreme weather events: drought periods, heat weaves, annual rainfall concentrated in short periods of heavy precipitation events, strong winds. The consequences of such changes can be large-scale forest fires, massive forest dieback and pests, and large-scale floods, and forests will be adversely affected by this climate change.
Thus over the past three years, the reserve has been engaged in forestation/restoration work that seeks to address the threat that climate change is posing around the Mediterranean Basin.
The reserve has developed a pilot Adaptation and Restoration Plan (ARP) that covers an ecological corridor connecting the Beqaa Valley and the Ammiq wetland in the east to the western slopes of the Shouf Mountains. So far, the pilot work has been implemented in several sites along the corridor, with a mix of forestation and landscape restoration techniques with more than 150 hectares. The process included the formulation of participatory forestation/restoration protocols and their implementation, and the development of monitoring and management plans, entrusted to a consortium including the Municipalities, the local communities, and the authorities of SBR.
And now, the forested/restored plots are standing out as a model best practice for up scaling and replication. Also we focus on building the capacities of the locals within SBR region and villages where we have initiated Forest Management Committees that are empowered to develop, restore, monitor and manage forest and woodland ecosystems as a way for sustainable ecosystem management process.

7. How can university students participate in supporting the mission of the SBR?

The core mission of Al-Shouf Cedar Society (ACS) is the conservation of the natural and cultural heritage of the Shouf Biosphere Reserve, in cooperation with the local institutions and communities, through the development and implementation of environmental, awareness and rural development activities.
And thus students can support this mission by increasing their engagement and participation in the awareness activities that are organized all year round and through spreading the conservation concepts each within his community and family. If we can ensure active and positive involvement from our students, then we can ensure a coming generation of environmental leaders.
